The Toledo Police Department will be conducting the 16th Citizens' Police Academy on consecutive Wednesday evenings beginning October 23, 2019 through January 22, 2019. Each session will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:00 p.m.
The purpose of the Toledo Citizens Police Academy is to enhance relations between the police and the community.
The Academy staff and officers of the Toledo Police Department believe the success of crime prevention and detection lies primarily with a strong partnership between the police and the community they serve. The better we get to know each other, the more we can accomplish together. The Toledo Citizens Police Academy is designed to give members of the community an overview of what police work is really like.
The Citizen Academy is a miniature version of the Toledo Police Academy. Participants will receive training in subjects that vary from criminal law to the use of deadly force. Each member of the class will be invited to Ride-A-Long with an officer during a tour of duty. At the end of the academy, there will be a graduation ceremony with diplomas to be awarded by the Chief of Police. The instructors will be members of the Toledo Police Department.
It is our hope that by the time the program ends, participants will not only have learned something valuable about how the Toledo Police Department operates, but will have also gained a few friends.
The Citizens Police Academy is a ten-week course meeting one night a week for three hours. Classes will be held at the Toledo Police Academy, in the Owens Community College Fire Science/Law Enforcement Center, 30439 Tracy Road, or at the Toledo Police Range, located at the rear of the Scott Park District Station, 2301 Nebraska Avenue. The class will also take tours of the Safety Building and the Lucas County 911 Building.
Toledo Citizen Police Academy participants must:
- Be residents of the City of Toledo
- Be over 21 years of age
- Pass a criminal history background check
- Attend 80% of the sessions
- Complete and submit a written application form
Classes will be selected for maximum community diversity and the class size is limited to 25 participants.
