Toledo Police Department Drug Take Back Day
Message from the Chief
The year 2015 was anything but routine. Early in the year we lost two good friends; Mayor D. Michael Collins suffered a severe heart attack and passed away five days later and, on the same day of the mayor’s cardiac episode, making an already sad day worse, Officer Mike Greenwood passed away while shoveling snow at his home.
In March, Toledo was visited by the National Socialist Movement (NSM). The group’s goal was to incite violence in our city. They failed miserably. Toledoans came out to protest, as is their right, and made their opinions known to the NSM members. When the group realized their incendiary rhetoric was failing, they decided to end the rally early.
Toledo saw one of the most violent weeks in decades in August. Six homicides were recorded in just six days. Toledo, as did almost every mid to large size city in the country, experienced a dramatic rise in shooting incidents. In Toledo, shootings were up 46% from 2014. However, homicides were down 8.3%. TPD is working to develop new strategies to address gun violence in Toledo to ensure this trend does not continue.
